Renzo Piano and ceramist Toni Cumella wrap Centro Botín in 270,000 pearlescent ceramic discs that mirror the sea, sky and shifting light of Spain's Cantabrian coast.
Centro Botín, designed by Renzo Piano in Santander, has become a symbol of how contemporary architecture can reconcile a city with its waterfront. A floating link between land and bay, in which ceramics play an absolutely central role.
The architecture: a floating link between city and sea The project stands out for its urban and landscape sensitivity, resolving the historic separation between Santander and its seafront.
A structure raised on pilotis To avoid taking away public space and to preserve the visual continuity of the Pereda Gardens towards the bay, the building is lifted off the ground on slender columns. Visitors can walk beneath the volumes, enjoying uninterrupted views of the sea and a soft, sheltered light.
Two bodies in balance The complex is split into two rounded volumes that recall the hulls of a ship. The west body is entirely devoted to art, housing exhibition halls with wide glazed fronts facing the water. The smaller east body hosts educational activities, offices and a 300-seat auditorium. The two volumes are linked by steel and glass walkways nicknamed the pachinko , which fly over the dock.
The ceramics: 270,000 cells of light and reflection While glass and lightness define the fronts facing the sea, the true formal identity of Centro Botín lies in its outer skin. Renzo Piano designed a continuous envelope that covers the lower "belly", the sides and the roof of the curved structures.
A skin of circular scales The façade is made up of roughly 270,000 circular ceramic pieces (or discs) about 15 cm in diameter. Piano himself described the pattern as something akin to "the cells of human skin" — pores that let the building visually breathe and blend into the natural setting of the Cantabrian coast.
Material and pearlescent effect Developed and produced in collaboration with ceramist Toni Cumella (Cerámica Cumella), the pieces have a semi-glossy, pearlescent glazed finish. This texture optimally captures Santander's chromatic variations, reflecting the blue of the sea, the greys of cloudy days and the golden tones of sunset.
Mathematical precision The ceramic discs are screwed onto aluminium trays fixed to the outer skin of the building. On flat and single-curvature surfaces the pieces keep perfect equidistance along straight and diagonal lines; on double-curvature areas (corners and spherical zones), however, the size and layout of the pieces vary within millimetres to faithfully follow the complex organic geometry of the volume.
