From Tradition to Brise-Soleil: The Ceramic Skin of Guangzhou's Railway Administrative Center

Nieto Sobejano Arquitectos wraps Guangzhou's new Railway Administrative Center in extruded iridescent green ceramic fins that evoke Chinese celadon and filter the subtropical sun.
In contemporary architecture, a building's envelope is no longer conceived as a mere enclosure, but as a living membrane capable of filtering light, engaging with its surroundings, and conveying cultural identity. An outstanding example of this synthesis is the Railway Network Administrative Center in Guangzhou , designed by the Spanish studio Nieto Sobejano Arquitectos in collaboration with the Guangzhou Design Institute. Located at the foot of the majestic Baiyun Mountain and next to the Guangzhou Gymnasium, this 57,000 m² complex not only solves a complex functional program for infrastructure management, but also formalizes a deep tribute to the material culture of southern China through ceramic innovation. A facade tuned to landscape and infrastructure The building's volumetric design interweaves two seemingly distant concepts: the modular precision of the railway network and the organic delicacy of flowers, a historic symbol of Guangzhou. Yet it is in the ventilated facade where this duality reaches its highest tectonic expression. Responding to Guangzhou's subtropical climate and the proximity of the Baiyun natural park, Nieto Sobejano designed a double skin composed of an inner curtain wall and a system of vertical extruded ceramic brise-soleil. The piece: monumental geometry and iridescent glaze The centerpiece of the project is a custom three-dimensional ceramic element. Rather than conventional flat plates, the envelope is composed of large-format tubular elements ( 1238 × 250 × 250 mm ) mounted vertically. 1. Bespoke extrusion The technical complexity of extruding hollow ceramic profiles of such dimensions requires rigorous control of stresses during drying and firing to avoid deformation. Each element acts as a three-dimensional lattice casting shadow on the glass, drastically reducing thermal gains from solar radiation. 2. Glaze as chromatic link The surface finish stands out for its vibrant, iridescent green glaze — an explicit reference to the historic tradition of Chinese celadon and to the dense vegetation of Baiyun Mountain. The gentle curvature of the pieces, combined with the chromatic vibration of the reactive glaze, makes the facade shift in hue throughout the day depending on light incidence and the observer's position. Industrial production and local context Although Chinese institutional architecture often keeps auxiliary manufacturers anonymous in public tenders, the execution of this facade highlights the maturity of the technical terracotta industry in Guangdong province — a global epicenter of ceramic production centered in Foshan. The project involved a rigorous direct prototyping process (mock-ups) between the studio's Madrid/Berlin offices, local architects, and regional master ceramists to calibrate the extrusion die and the chemistry of high-temperature glazes. Conclusion The Guangzhou Railway Administrative Center demonstrates how architectural ceramics can evolve from traditional cladding into industrialized, energy-efficient construction systems.
