Ceramics accelerates its tech shift: five key trends from Asia heading into Uniceramics 2026

Foshan Uniceramics Expo 2026 (20-23 April) previews the five fronts reshaping the ceramic factory: automation, advanced digital decoration, decarbonisation, new materials and next-generation machinery.
From 20 to 23 April 2026, the Tanzhou International Convention and Exhibition Center in Foshan will host a new edition of Foshan Uniceramics Expo , regarded as Asia's largest ceramic trade fair and one of the most reliable barometers of the global industry. The event brings together tile and sanitaryware manufacturers, machinery suppliers, glaze and digital ink producers, spray-dryer specialists and engineering firms under one roof, offering a practical reading of where the sector is heading. This year's technical programme is built around five axes already reshaping how ceramics are designed, produced and sold. 1. Factory automation and digitalisation The ceramic factory is moving toward a fully connected model. Integrating MES and ERP software with in-line sensors, machine vision and distributed control systems makes it possible to track every piece from the press to packaging. Hydraulic presses are gradually giving way to servo-electric solutions and continuous compaction technologies, while optical inspection systems detect tone, calibre and flatness defects in real time, cutting second-grade output. Digital management of glazing lines and recipes, combined with data-driven predictive maintenance, is shortening format changeover times and reducing raw-material consumption. 2. Advanced digital decoration Digital inkjet has moved beyond imitating stone and wood to building multi-layer surfaces almost indistinguishable from natural materials. New higher-resolution, wider printheads, combined with functional inks —metallics, reactive, protective and, above all, digital matter with relief effects synchronised with the graphic— make it possible to align design and texture pixel by pixel. This unlocks shorter runs, mass customisation and near-endless collections without penalising line productivity. 3. Sustainability and energy efficiency European regulatory pressure (CBAM, ETS, taxonomy) and the growing demands of large customers are accelerating decarbonisation. In Asia the response combines more efficient roller kilns, heat recovery between kilns and dryers, partial electrification of auxiliary processes, trials with hydrogen and biogas blends, and a rising share of self-consumed solar power on industrial rooftops. In parallel, recycled grog and sludge, bodies with lower virgin-clay content and thinner formats that cut kilos per square metre installed are gaining ground. 4. New materials and large formats Large-format porcelain slabs (up to 1,600 × 3,200 mm and beyond) are consolidating their role in architecture, furniture and technical claddings. The trend is moving toward thinner, lighter pieces with higher mechanical strength, able to compete with natural stone and quartz surfaces. Added-value finishes are also expanding: antibacterial surfaces, high-safety anti-slip, photocatalytic finishes for indoor air quality and anti-fingerprint treatments for matt and satin looks. 5. Next-generation machinery Equipment makers are coming to Foshan with proposals focused on flexibility, speed and precision. Modular lines designed to switch formats without long stoppages, more compact handling and palletising robots, high-efficiency spray dryers and mills, and new generations of kilns with improved thermal uniformity sit alongside digital platforms that centralise plant control. The aim is clear: produce more with less energy, less waste and a lower cost per square metre.
